Sustainable Mobility in Waste Management: Mubea eCargobikes for the City of Freiburg

The Waste Management and City Cleaning Freiburg (“Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung” (ASF)) is committed to maintaining cleanliness and improving the quality of life in the region every day. At Mubea U-Mobility, we are proud to be part of this important mission.

In August 2024, we delivered six of our environmentally friendly eCargobikes to the ASF, which are now significantly improving the efficiency and safety of Freiburg’s waste management operations. Additionally, the so called “Gässleflitzer” has been very well received by both residents and visitors of the city. 'A really interesting vehicle! A real eye-catcher!' remarked one visitor as she spotted the vehicle in the old town near Freiburg’s Münster.

Tailor-Made Mubea Cargobikes for Waste Management

By transitioning its fleet to eco-friendly drives, ASF is targeting the areas where most direct emissions occur. In close collaboration, we have customized our eCargobikes specifically to meet the demands of modern waste management. The deployed Mubea eCargobikes feature a 2 m² box divided into different compartments. The locker compartment is accessible via doors on both sides, while the waste compartment includes a separate section for auxiliary and operational materials, easily reachable through a rear door. These eCargobikes are particularly used for cleaning parks as well as other traffic-calmed areas and have already proven their worth in collecting glass, paper, and waste.

Additional technical features include:

4-way tool holder between the driver’s cabin and the box for quick access to hand tools
Mounting plate for a revolving light
Ventilation system in the locker and waste compartment
A sealed partition wall ensuring optimal separation of the compartments
Liquid drain in the waste compartment for better cleaning and hygiene

As always, Mubea Cargobikes offer a chainless drive, regenerative braking, excellent climbing ability with full load (up to 18% with boost gear), theft protection, an electric parking brake, and RFID-based operation. This ensures, as with all our other customers, high efficiency and safety for drivers in their daily waste disposal tasks.

With the implementation of the current fleet, ASF has moved beyond the pilot phase and is now focusing on sustainable investments in Cargobike products. Mubea U-Mobility continues to work closely with ASF to develop and provide customized solutions based on individual requirements.

Goal: Climate Neutrality

ASF has ambitious goals: by 2025, the city cleaning fleet is to be climate-neutral, by 2030 the municipal waste collection, and by 2035 the entire ASF. Our Cargobikes support ASF in reducing emissions and making Freiburg more sustainable. Additionally, we provide comprehensive support in product configuration, service, spare parts supply, and customer care.
